This Day That Year: When Shah Rukh Khan marked his debut in Bollywood and gave us an icon to worship

Yes, it was exactly 26 years ago on this day when Shah Rukh Khan started his Bollywood journey with Divya Bharti and Rishi Kapoor’s Deewana. He was a star in making and a force to reckon with. Can you believe he has already spent such a long time in the industry and yet continues to win our heart with his sweet gestures and that dimpled smile? Thanks to SRK’s decision of taking a parallel lead against Rishi Kapoor in Deewana that gave us the star he is today. The most experimental actor of the recent times, he has always been bold with his choice of films. He started signing negative roles when other actors would avoid taking any such step. Darr, Anjaam, and then Baazigar were those three vital chapters in his career that proved he’s the dark horse of this race and he means business. Signing a movie with Sunny Deol, who was a big star then, was a huge career risk that he took but his decision was worth it. Today the film is synonymous with kkk…. Kiran, an identity Shah Rukh alone could render.

Soon after a successful run at the box office, Shah Rukh Khan tried changing his image to a chocolate boy with movies like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Dil To Pagal Hai. Not to forget his anti-hero stint in Josh, that earned him all the whistles. The actor is quite clear when he names Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa as his most favourite movie in his entire career to date. Probably it was the innocence of his character in the film that left a lasting impression on his heart. After few duds like Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, Oh! Darling Yeh Hai India and Maya Memsaab, his career was back on track and since then there was no looking back for him. With a star power as huge as that and fan following as crazy as his, SRK easily beats any other actor in the industry to achieve such a big feat and be the most loved actor of all time. A doting father and an ideal husband, Shah Rukh Khan would never let anything tarnish his image of a perfect family man. He knows that his job as a successful actor takes a toll on his personal life, but work is a commitment and he’s committed to it until his last breath. A thorough professional, the Jab Harry Met Sejal star always strives for perfection and he will even go the extra mile to achieve it. His next release, Zero, is touted to be a huge risk by the entire industry but he wants to follow his heart and trusts his director blindly. In recent times, when some actors are mindlessly doing stuff that they shouldn’t and others are emphasising on doing different genres, Shah Rukh fans are fortunate that he falls in the latter category. Though his experiments might not show the desired results today, but the same movies will be declared as cults in coming future. I loved him in and as Raees and even Fan was a unique concept that he attempted. It’s admirable how he wishes to take challenges even today and wishes to evolve as an actor every day. His charming smile and that endearing persona is the reason why my heart skips a beat every time he comes on screen.

Words will fall short if I decide to pen down my thoughts on this megastar. I am still rummaging through words to find out if there’s any better way to say he’s an icon that’s worshipped all over the world. 26 years is a huge run but those are just a few chapters from his King size life. Shah Rukh Khan will eternally be King Khan in my heart, always and forever
