Soorma, the biographical sports drama, opened in theatres on Friday. The film is based on the life of Hockey Legend Sandeep Singh and the inspirational journey of his comeback to the national team. It stars Diljit Dosanjh and Taapsee Pannu in key roles. Soorma is directed by Shaad Ali, who previously helmed films like Saathiya, Bunty Aur Babli, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom and others. On its opening day, the movie has received a decent response at the box office and has minted Rs 3.35 crore. Well, that is the thing with content driven movies these days.
The movie is facing a tough competition from the superhero movie Ant-Man and The Wasp. Though Soorma has received a good response in Punjab and other northern circuits. Also, the word of mouth of the movie is pretty good. And due to that Soorma might just gain momentum over the weekend.
With those numbers, Soorma has joined the ranks of lowest openers of the year. Even Urvashi Rautela’s Hate Story 4 was able to gather more money than this. Hate Story 4 had minted Rs 3.76 on its opening day. Manoj Bajpayee and Sidharth Malhotra starrer Aiyaary was also able to mint Rs 3.36 crore. The only movies falling behind are Hichki with Rs 3.30 crore and Irrfan Khan’s Blackmail with Rs 2.81 crore on their opening day.
BollywoodLife’s Urmimala Bannerjee watched the film and enjoyed it. She gave the movie 2.5 stars out of 5 and wrote in her review, “Diljit Dosanjh’s Soorma has it’s moments and the actor-singer puts in an earnest performance. You will fall in love with his extremely supportive uncle and parents. However, given the fact that Sandeep is not as widely known as some other Indian sportsmen (read cricketers), a more fleshed out story would have been far more engrossing.”
